College/Department Information

The Department of Neuroscience and Regenerative Medicine is charged with conducting high-impact original biomedical research and translating the findings to clinical applications, and in educating future physicians and researchers. Our research addresses fundamental questions in cell and developmental biology, endocrinology, neuroscience, regenerative medicine, and cancer biology. Collaborations have been established with clinical departments for studies that investigate various diseases including neurological diseases (stroke, epilepsy, muscular dystrophy, and Guillain-Barre syndrome); psychiatric disorders (schizophrenia and autism); degenerative diseases (osteoporosis); cancer; and endocrinological disorders.

This position is for a Research Assistant working in Qin Wang's lab in the Department of Neuroscience & Regenerative Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University. The Wang lab studies mechanisms and treatment strategies of neuropsychiatric diseases using mouse models. The Research Assistant will learn to perform behavioral tests, biochemical assays, and genotyping, along with other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

The duties include but are not limited to:
  • Perform a variety of experimental studies including C. elegans behavior, lifespan, cell biology, and molecular biology experiments. Experiments may include, but not be limited to performing genotyping, microscopy, western blotting, and generating new transgenic worm strains. Analyze results of experiments and procedures using manual or computer techniques.
  • Manages continuous operations of the research laboratory, orders supplies and animals as necessary, keeps track of costs, expenses, inventory and delivered goods.
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural, life, health care or materials science directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned and experience in a research, basic science or clinical setting particularly clinical trials research; OR Associate degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural, life, health care or materials science directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned and a minimum of three years' experience in a research, basic science or clinical setting particularly clinical trials research.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with mice genotyping and western blotting. Experience with C. elegans research, in neuroscience or a related field and have experience with generating new transgenic C. elegans strains, or a willingness to learn. Knowledge of molecular biological techniques including PCR, Western blotting, immunostaining, and cell culture.

Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases.

SKILLS

Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Detail-oriented with strong organizational and prioritization skills.

ABILITIES

Ability to maintain confidentiality, work independently with only general supervision, complete work, and meet deadlines. Willingness and ability to work with research animals.

Shift/Salary/Benefits

Shift: Days; Monday - Friday (Work outside of normal business hours may be required).

Pay Band: B5

Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position.
